University of Sussex has best political scene and nightlife, say students

Students have voted the University of Sussex best for political scene and nightlife in a new survey of British universities.

Which? University’s annual student survey, published today (Friday 19 October), asked more than 5,000 students across the country what they love about their university.

The University of Sussex impressed students with the diversity of opinions on campus and the opportunities to discuss important issues. It shares the top spot in the political scene category with Cambridge, Goldsmiths, LSE, Manchester and Oxford.

Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex, said: “This will come as no surprise to anyone who knows Sussex. We have an amazing culture of radicalism, critical thinking and, at times, dissent.

“Like every community we have a huge diversity of views and opinions – and I’m proud that people are overwhelmingly respectful of one another and their differences.

“Universities at their best are places where ideas are tested and people have the freedom to form and reform their political selves. Sussex does this better than almost anywhere else.”

The result comes as the University launches The Exchange, a new initiative to encourage free expression, lively debate and the exchange of thoughts and ideas on campus and beyond.
